Scrap exceeds 83% of Europe's EAF production costs

Last year, the cost of scrap increased to 83% of the overall production costs per tonne of liquid steel for Europe’s electric arc furnaces, according to SteelConsult’s analysis. The Dutch consultancy indicates that the average scrap cost per tonne of liquid steel produced was $241.47/tonne in 2009 but rose to roughly $380/t last year.

Other steelmaking costs remained relatively stable, its report shows, such as the cost of electricity which slipped from $30.35/t to $28.72/t year-on-year. Likewise, continued efficiency moves pushed labour down from $17.67/t to $16.72/t, same basis
